Messy meals are a sign your baby is learning. Squishing, dropping, and smearing food all build skills. A little planning can make the cleanup much lighter, so you can enjoy the meal.

Set up the seat
- Use a stable high chair with a harness, and buckle baby in every time.
- Make sure baby sits upright, with hips and back supported.
- Add a footrest if possible. Feet that rest on something help baby feel steady while eating.
- Never leave baby alone in the chair, and keep meals out of the car and off the couch.
Protect the space
- Put a washable mat or an old sheet under the chair.
- Choose a bib that covers the chest and catches drips.
- Roll up sleeves, or feed baby in a diaper or a simple outfit on especially messy days.
- Keep a damp cloth and a dry towel within reach before you start.
Pick tools that stay put
- A plate or bowl that grips the tray keeps flying food to a minimum.
- Small portions mean less to throw. Refill as baby eats.
- Choose gear that is easy to wash. Silicone items are often dishwasher safe, so check the care label on each product.
Plan the timing
- Feed when baby is alert and not overly hungry or overtired.
- Keep meals short. Twenty to thirty minutes is plenty for many babies.
- Clean up after the meal, not during it, so baby is not interrupted while exploring.
Keep it positive
- Eat together when you can. Babies learn by watching you.
- Turn off screens so baby can focus on the food.
- Let baby touch, squish, and smell. It is all part of getting comfortable with food.
- Skip the pressure. If baby is done, end the meal calmly.
